The Lagos State Government has intensified surveillance, public awareness and clinical preparedness against possible increases in diphtheria cases across the state. Its Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, disclosed this at a press briefing on the state’s diphtheria preparedness and response, stressing that Lagos currently has no outbreak of the disease. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared what he described as a “small state of emergency” on waste management, ordering immediate measures to tackle refuse accumulation and improve waste collection across the metropolis. Sanwo-Olu announced the intervention on Wednesday during an inspection of the Olusosun dumpsite, where he acknowledged growing pressure on the state’s waste management system and the increasing incidence of indiscriminate dumping. The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), in collaboration with the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) and the Mobile Police, has arrested a resident of Meiran, Lagos, for allegedly dumping waste into a drainage channel during rainfall. The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation has boosted the purse of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), with a personal donation of N500,000 (five hundred thousand Naira only). The Lagos State Government has presented two pick-up trucks to the Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, to strengthen security along rail corridors in the state as well as improve the safety of passengers and staff.
