The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has sealed two properties and arrested multiple offenders in Alimosho Local Government Areas during intensified night and day enforcement raids targeting illegal dumping and drainage abuse.
The operation, led by LAWMA’s Project W.I.S.E (West) team, swept through Ikotun and adjoining Local Council Development Areas, focusing on indiscriminate disposal, illegal dumpsites, and waste discharged into drains.
During night surveillance, officers caught fifteen-year-old Chukwudi Opara dumping refuse at Ikotun-Egbe roundabout around 10 p.m and he was handed over to the Task Force office in Oshodi.
The team also sealed a car lot at Iroko Estate, LASU-Isheri Road, for channeling waste into drainage, and a furniture showroom for similar violations. A mini store at Diamond Estate was served an intention-to-seal notice for failing to use a registered Private Sector Participant (PSP) operator.
Acting on residents’ complaints, LAWMA shut an undeveloped gated plot on Kaslat/Sarumi Street being used by cart pushers as an illegal dumpsite. The group had been burning waste on the premises. A 65-year-old security guard, Abubakar Yunusa, was arrested for complicity.
LAWMA Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Doctor Muyiwa Gbadegesin said enforcement would continue statewide to curb violations and protect public health.
“Indiscriminate dumping, burning of refuse, and patronage of illegal waste handlers remain serious offences under Lagos State environmental laws and will not be tolerated,” he said.
He urged residents to use only LAWMA-accredited PSP operators and report infractions through official channels.
The agency pledged prompt response to complaints and deeper collaboration with communities for a cleaner Lagos.
