The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has distributed a total of 172 recycling bins and collected recyclable materials at Osborne Estate, Ikoyi, under its ongoing Waste-Free Lagos Pilot Scheme and recycling buy-back initiative, aimed at promoting household waste separation and recycling.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said that the initiative was designed to encourage residents to embrace recycling and recognise the value of recyclable materials in building a sustainable waste management system.
He explained that recyclables were collected from 64 bins distributed during the previous week, while an additional 108 bins were distributed to households across the estate, bringing the total number of bins distributed to 172.
The exercise also featured door-to-door sensitisation, with the team engaging household waste handlers on the objectives of the initiative and the proper use of the recycling bins.
Gbadegesin emphasised that effective recycling began at the household level, noting that residents’ participation in separating recyclable materials would support resource recovery and reduce the volume of waste requiring final disposal.
He urged residents to participate actively in the buy-back initiative by separating recyclable materials from other household waste and using the designated bins appropriately.
The Waste-Free Lagos Pilot Scheme forms part of LAWMA’s broader efforts to promote a circular economy, strengthen public participation in recycling and advance a cleaner, more sustainable Lagos.
