The Lagos State Government has set a firm timeline of February 2027 for the completion and operational rollout of Phase 2 of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Blue Line.
The expansion of the Blue rail-line for commuters along the Mile 2-Badagry expressway corridor
will see three new modern rail stations, Festac, Alakija, and Trade Fair opened to the public, extending the reach of the high-capacity electric rail network and increasing its operational station count from five to eight.
The Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Abimbola Akinajo, disclosed this major infrastructure update during the 2026 Media Parley organized by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation in Ikeja.
According to her, opening the new stops by the first quarter of 2027 would directly integrate dense residential communities and crucial economic hubs such as the expansive International Trade Fair Complex and Festac Town into the state’s modern urban rail grid.
“The planned opening of the three stations in the first quarter of 2027 will bring rail services closer to more residents, particularly commuters along the Festac–Alakija–Trade Fair corridor,” Akinajo added.
The LAMATA boss emphasized that the state’s drive to offer a safe, rapid, and reliable alternative to road gridlock.

Since launching commercial operations, the Blue Line has operated across five key stops: Marina, National Theatre, Iganmu, Alaba, and Mile 2.
The addition of FESTAC, Alakija, and Trade Fair marks a decisive leap forward in pushing mass transit deeper into the Western corridor of Africa’s largest megacity.
The rail expansion forms part of a broader, multi-modal master plan aimed at tackling urban congestion in Lagos through integrated transport infrastructure.
Beyond the track extension, the LAMATA boss revealed that construction of four Quality Bus Corridors (QBCs) routes was now nearing completion, saying this is designed to optimize feeder bus routes connecting into the rail system.
She added that construction works on the multi-modal Marina and Mile 2 Interchange Hubs have recorded considerable progress, laying the groundwork for seamless transfers between rail, bus, and water transport.
Also, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Rasheed Muri-Okunola, announced plans to introduce a new driver’s licence scheme in 2027 that would significantly reduce processing time and eliminate prolonged delays experienced by applicants.
Muri-Okunola said the agency had signed professional agreements with consultants, ANCOR Advisory, who were currently working on the framework for the project ahead of its planned launch.
Speaking earlier, the Commissioner for Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the Ministry was committed to promoting and ensuring intermodal transportation was achieved in line with the THEMES Plus developmental agenda of the state government.
The media parley also provided an opportunity for transport agencies to present updates on their activities and planned initiatives.
