The Nigerian Railway Corporation says all equipment involved in the Warri-Itakpe Train Service incident of 8 June 2026 has been recovered, and injured passengers have been treated and discharged.
The train, carrying 442 passengers and 40 crew, derailed at about 4:17 p.m. near Goodluck Jonathan Railway Station, Agbor, Delta State. It had departed Itakpe at 12:00 noon en route to Ujevwu, Warri.
NRC activated its Emergency Response Plan immediately working with the Delta and Kogi State Governments, NEMA, FRSC, Police, NSCDC and local communities, all passengers and crew were evacuated and accounted for.
“Regrettably, five people died and several others sustained injuries. NRC has extended condolences to bereaved families”.
“As of today, all injured passengers admitted at hospitals in Agbor and nearby communities have been treated and discharged. One NRC staff member with serious injuries remains under specialist care”.
NRC thanked medical teams at General Hospital Owa-Oyibu, Owa-Alero Hospital and Central Hospital Agbor for their “prompt response, professionalism and compassionate care”.
“A Medical and Victim Support Committee, chaired by Doctor Osarunwense Igbinogu, has begun visits to affected families. The committee has so far met five injured passengers and the family of one deceased victim in Agbor, Asaba and Ugbolu, Delta State. Visits to families of two other deceased passengers in Warri are next.
According to the Corporation, with rescue and equipment recovery completed, NRC engineers had started rail track restoration while four capsized coaches and two derailed coaches had been recovered from the site.

It also said callers should provide names, coach and seat numbers for faster assistance.
The NRC also welcomed feedback and observations to aid investigations and improve service safety.
NRC’s Managing Director, Doctor Kayode Opeifa, reaffirmed the Corporation’s commitment to cooperate with investigators, implement safety recommendations, and strengthen measures for safer rail operations nationwide.
