Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the maiden National Intermediate Games, tagged “Lagos 2026,” charging members to discharge their responsibilities with dedication, diligence and a clear sense of purpose.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony at Lagos House, Marina on Wednesday, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the assignment as a critical step towards the development of sports in Nigeria, stressing that the competition would provide a platform for discovering and nurturing young talents across the country.
The Governor said the games, scheduled to hold in Lagos in October 2026, would serve as a vehicle for youth development, social inclusion, national integration and cultural exchange.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the state government’s broader vision of promoting sports as a tool for economic growth, social cohesion and human capital development.
Sanwo-Olu noted that beyond competition, the National Intermediate Games would create opportunities for young athletes to showcase their abilities, develop their skills and compete at higher levels in the future.
The Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, who also serves as Co-Chairman of the committee, expressed appreciation to the Governor for the confidence reposed in the team.
He assured that members of the committee would work tirelessly to ensure the successful hosting of the games and deliver a platform that would positively impact millions of Nigerian youths.
Earlier, members of the committee, led by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, paid a courtesy visit to the Governor.
Olopade commended the Lagos State Government for its sustained commitment to sports development and for positioning the state as a leading destination for major sporting events in Nigeria.
He expressed confidence that Lagos 2026 would set a new standard for youth sports development and contribute significantly to the growth of athletics and other sporting disciplines across the country.
