The National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS), Lagos State University, LASU, chapterhas unveiled the fifth edition of the Eko Legislative Conference (ELC 5.0), describing it as a platform to promote leadership, governance, and cultural consciousness among students.
Speaker of the 11th NULASS LASU Student Parliamentary Council, Rt. Hon. Mustapha Ishola, made this known during a news conference in Ojo, noting that the initiative is aimed at shaping a new generation of responsible leaders.The conference, themed “Eko as Legacy: Lawmaking, Leadership, and the Preservation of Cultural Heritage,” underscores the importance of identity and cultural awareness in governance.
According to Ishola, the three-day programme will begin with an awareness walk designed to showcase the richness and diversity of Lagos culture, followed by a legislative debate featuring student representatives from the five divisions of the state, and will conclude with a grand finale involving policymakers, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
He explained that the debate segment would simulate parliamentary engagement and address key issues affecting students and society, while the grand finale would focus on governance, youth inclusion, and the preservation of cultural heritage.
The student leader commended the Lagos State Government for its continued support to students through bursaries and scholarships but expressed concerns over delays and inconsistencies in disbursement.
He noted that many students face challenges during the bursary process, including limited awareness, registration difficulties, and inadequate engagement with relevant authorities, which have affected access and participation.
Ishola called for improved efficiency and transparency in bursary payments, stronger welfare policies, and a more accessible, structured, and student-friendly registration system.
He emphasised that student leaders are partners in governance and urged authorities to strengthen collaboration with student representatives to address pressing concerns.
Reaffirming the council’s commitment to accountability and effective representation, Ishola said the student parliament would continue to amplify students’ voices and engage constructively with stakeholders.
He added that ELC 5.0 extends beyond LASU, describing it as a broader movement aimed at connecting students across institutions and in the diaspora.
