The Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Office of Physical Planning, has inaugurated the 2026 World Habitat Day Planning Committee, charging its members to make meaningful and holistic contributions towards the successful planning and delivery of the annual global event.
The inauguration ceremony, held in the Ministry’s Conference Room at Alausa, Ikeja, was presided over by the Permanent Secretary, Office of Physical Planning, Olayinka Adebayo Wasiu.
In his address, the Permanent Secretary underscored the significance of World Habitat Day, which is observed globally on the first Monday of October each year to reflect on the state of human settlements and reaffirm the fundamental right of everyone to adequate shelter.
He noted that the 2026 theme: “Adequate Housing for All,” underscores the need for stronger collaboration among government, private sector operators, development partners, and other stakeholders in the built environment to address the prevailing housing challenges.
Wasiu charged members of the Committee to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, dedication, and a strong sense of purpose.
He stressed the importance of teamwork and synergy, urging members to leverage their diverse expertise to ensure a successful and impactful celebration.
“I want you all to bring your expertise and contribute meaningfully before, during, and after the programme because Lagos is widely regarded as the pacesetter of development in Nigeria,” he stated.
Speaking further, the Permanent Secretary emphasized the need to tackle the housing deficit through a comprehensive and sustainable approach.
“The housing deficit is something we have to critically and holistically address in order to bridge the existing gap,” he added.
He reiterated that the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, through the Office of Physical Planning, is responsible for coordinating the annual observance of World Habitat Day in Lagos State.
The Permanent Secretary further explained that members of the Planning Committee were carefully selected from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to ensure broad representation, inclusiveness, and effective planning.
The 2026 World Habitat Day celebration is scheduled to hold on Monday, October 5, 2026, at the Blue Roof, LTV Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja.
The Lagos State Government remains steadfast in its commitment to implementing policies and initiatives that promote sustainable urban development, expand access to adequate housing, and improve the quality of life for all residents.
