VC: Project to Ease Accommodation Crisis, Boost Student Experience.
Lagos State University, LASU, has performed the soil-turning ceremony for a 1,500-bed TETFund Hostel Development intervention project on its main campus, in a public-private partnership aimed at tackling student accommodation challenges.
Speaking at LASU during the groundbreaking ceremony for a 1,500-bed Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund Hostel Development intervention project on the University’s main campus, in a public-private partnership, the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, praised the LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello for her compassion and commitment to students and staff.
The Minister who announced a series of federal projects for the university and tertiary institutions nationwide said Olatunji-Bello’s leadership centers around pushing the institution to be one of best in Africa, as well as ensuring the welfare of staff and Students.
He noted that LASU had 84,000 students but only 7,000 bed spaces, with 30,000 students needing accommodation. “LASU has the enviable position of being the most sought-after university in the country,” he said.
The minister credited President Tinubu with ending disruptions to the academic calendar. “Today, in the last three years, we haven’t had any strike at any tertiary institution. It’s not by coincidence,” he said.“When he was campaigning, he said a four-year course would be a four-year course. Three years later, what do we have? Four-year course is a four-year course” the Minister stated.
He acknowledged other principal officers, including for supporting the VC to advance high-quality education as mandated by President Bola Tinubu who made student welfare a priority, with TETFund earmarking 100 billion Naira this year to build student hostels across fifty tertiary institutions and 14 Mega Watts Power Plant at LASU among other projects.
Speaking on infrastructure, Subsidy Removal, the Minister said, “Tinubu’s administration has transformed “every single sector,” citing fuel subsidy removal, forex reforms, and road construction. “If you put together the total mileage of roads President Tinubu has constructed in the last three years, it’s more than was ever constructed in the country in the last 30 years,” he said.
In her speech, LASU’s Vice Chancellor, said the1,500-bed TETFund Hostel Development intervention project aimed at tackling students’ accommodation challenges, describing it as laying the foundation for a stronger, more inclusive, and supportive learning environment for them.Today is not just about turning the soil.
It is about reaffirming our commitment to excellence, growth, and the future of education in our great institution,” she said.
She expressed profound appreciation to the Minister for his presence at the ceremony which was a powerful testament to his unwavering support for the University while thanking him for ensuring the Nigerian education sector, continues to inspire confidence and progress.
