The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Olatunji Disu, has underscored the need to strengthen trust between the police and the public as a foundation for effective policing in Nigeria.
Disu made the remark during a visit to the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, located within the Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja, shortly after inspecting the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, headquarters nearby, where he once served as Commander.
Addressing members of the Lagos State Governors’ Office Correspondents’ Association, the IGP expressed delight at returning to a familiar environment, recalling his close working relationship with journalists during his time at the RRS.
He noted that the proximity between the Rapid Response Squad and the press centre had, in the past, fostered cooperation and mutual understanding between the police and the media.

Disu said his visit to Lagos also included engagements with senior police officers and a meeting with the State Governor, as well as an address to personnel of the Rapid Response Squad.
He charged officers to remain professional in the discharge of their duties and warned against any conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the police, stressing the importance of treating members of the public with dignity and respect.
The Inspector-General emphasised that modern policing is community-based, adding that citizens must be seen as partners in the maintenance of law and order.
He further explained that his visit to the press centre was to appreciate journalists for their longstanding support and to sustain the cordial relationship between the media and the police.
Responding on behalf of the Lagos State Government House Correspondents’ Association, Chairman George Okojie welcomed the IGP and described his appointment as well deserved.
According to Okojie, “Disu’s tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad, noting his accessibility, responsiveness to journalists, and concern for their welfare”.
He expressed confidence that his leadership would further enhance the image and effectiveness of the Nigeria Police Force.
